Bruce Wayne, New God; Jason Todd, Batman?!?!

Although Dan DiDio apparently hates the idea:
DiDio was also asked about the recent internet rumors that Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman will become New Gods. He answered: “Oh God, that’s a bad idea!”
Rich Johnston is still reporting that Bruce Wayne will die, ascend as a New God, and be replaced as Batman; but now he’s letting out who will supposedly be taking up the mantle:
The last two LITG columns… this one and this one, have covered the death of Bruce Wayne, his ascendancy as a Fifth World New God, and his replacement here on Earth.
I can now tell you that the new Batman will be designed by Alex Ross and will see Jason Todd under the cowl.
Poor Dick Grayson. Don’t you hate it when someone junior to you is promoted above your head?
This is all part of a cross-continuity, longform story by Grant Morrison and in terms of structure bears similarity to his “New X-Men,” but on a far wider scale. It sounds rather good.
He has a green light on this one now, so he’s apparently pretty sure that this is at least partially true.
I still think this is one of the dumber ideas that have come out of DC, but Morrison does good stories and I’ll just have to hope he makes this one a good story.
I’m not really surprised to see that it will be Jason Todd taking up the mantle, since he’s really the only one that it would be in character for. Dick Grayson has his own identity and his own town - he doesn’t need to be Batman. And Tim Drake has said repeatedly and emphatically that he does NOT want to be Batman, so Jason Todd is the only one that makes sense.
So yeah… retarded and wrong and a stupid move, but I guess I’ll bite my tongue and see how it plays out. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised

Heh… yeah, I noticed that, too.
This isn’t really doing anything to dispel the criticism that DC’s just trying to ape Marvel and the death of Captain America.
Next, Marvel will kill off TWO characters, just to see if DC will do it.
I couldn’t understand some parts of this article o.us poetry, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
Bruce Wayne, New God; Jason Todd, Batman?!?! « For The Love of Comics
New information regarding the death of Bruce Wayne and the future of Batman, The New Gods, and Jason Todd.
How about this, Batman is almost on the brink of death Jason Todd comes to his add giving him his life and switching body’s by the powers of the new gods make sence so far? Good, well making Jason Todd in Bruce Wyanes old body a new god and Bruce Wyane in Jason Todds young body a new Batman!Off the wall but that would be crazy!
DC stated last year that after the Crisis mess is over Nightwing/Dick Grayson will be taking a larger role in the DCU, more of a leadership role. Could this be what they were talking about. Nightwing is one of my favorite comics and in my opinon Grayson is the only one who could take on the cowel. With the changes in Tim Drake over the last year I could see him becoming the next Nightwing, and Wayne’s son, Damien putting on Robins cape. That’s just the way I see it. It makes more sense that a teenager (Drake or Damien), and a killer vigilante (Red Hood0.
On a simmilar vein, I think Bucky, not Frank Castle, will be the new Captian America. He uses a gun as the Winter Soldier, and he stole Caps sheild from SHEILD.
Thanks for the comment!
If you click the pingback up above dated Nov. 28th, you’ll see that WB apparently vetoed the idea of killing Bruce Wayne, so it won’t be happening.
Also, in the most recent issue of Captain America - I don’t have the issue number handy - Bucky’s conversation with Tony Stark makes it pretty clear that he’s the next Cap. Frank Castle gave up the idea months ago and even told Bucky where to find the mask that Cap threw down when he surrendered.
When I first heard about this via hearsay, I thought my friend meant Bruce would become the new Specter, or maybe even Deadman. That made sense. In my brief skimming of the New Gods article on Wikipedia, I can only say a hardcore WTF?
And Jason under the cowl? Given the little I know of post-resurrection Jason, he’d be a terrible Bats unless he’s had an epic change of heart.
If anyone should get to claim the cape and cowl, they should make it a character reminiscent of Terry McGuinness. Batman Beyond was awesome but gets no love, ever…
Bruce Wayne, New God; Jason Todd, Batman?!?! It may happen, but I figure it will go a little somethin’ like this. Jason Todd will stay Red Robin, Dick Grayson may don the batsuit for a while, or maybe a variation then he will become Nightwing, again. Tim Drake will give up the Robin mantle and become Batman for a while before handing it over to Damian Wayne.
Except Tim Drake has said he has no interest in being Batman and WB has vetoed the whole killing Bruce Wayne idea.
Hey aint Azreal back in the DCU now? He could come back and be Batman again, I am sure they got his messed up power armor costume from way back when next to Stephanie’s… oh, I mean, next to the new Talia / Ra armor.
I would love to see that happen and have Dick just get up and say, “OKAY, FUCK IT! I AM DONE!” while Red Robin and new Nightwing, Damian Wayne start plotting the new/old Azreal Batman’s death. hehehe…
Tim is still busy screaming at Titans to notice anything Cowl-related while hitting on Wonder Teen.

Jason Todd= Crazy Ex-Robin the readership voted to be offed..then became the equally nuts Red Hood.
I mean really you let Jason in and there will be no Villans left for him to fight. I don’t think they’ll kill of Dick or Tim but I think readership may slump if Bruce is dumped as Batman. I mean my grandfather and Grandmother know who Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne are, how could you kill of either. Then again DC like every comic ( Japanese/American/Ect) has those revolving doors of the great unknown..so you never know.

Wait, wait… 1) traditional character from the 40s dies in a big event. 2) Comes back with a new uniform designed by Alex Ross. 3) Is possibly replaced by a former sidekick who was supposed to be dead, util he got better.
Isn’t Johnston confusing Batman with Captain America?
